- The medicinal properties of Manuka honey

Manuka honey is a precious nectar with surprising health benefits.

The Manuka tree is native to New Zealand. When the trees are in full bloom, bees are attracted by its many flowers on which they directly collect the precious pollen whose special properties allow them to produce a unique honey that is completely different than any other honey.

Manuka honey is known for its antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and healing properties, all of which make it an effective support to the immune system.

This honey is said to be a "natural remedy" against respiratory diseases (sore throat, cough, bronchitis) and it is very mild for the gastrointestinal tract. Scientists at the University of Waikato in New Zealand have observed that it can prevent the development of various bacteria, including staphylococci and streptococci. To soothe sore throat, some trials have shown that it works faster, more effectively and at a lower dose than other types of honey.

Manuka honey also has highly effective antiseptic and healing properties for the skin. For example, applying Manuka honey on an acneic skin with infected pimples can help eliminate them and reduce scarring.

Unique composition of Manuka honey - quality, authenticity and traceability

Flora's Manuka honey comes from a Maori (native population of New Zealand) beekeeping company* that is 100% sustainable and ecological. Quality and authenticity are ensured by a traceability system called Oaye and by two classification systems: MGO and UMF.

MGO stands for "methylglyoxal", an active substance with powerful antibacterial properties. The higher the level, the greater the antibacterial properties of the honey.

UMF is the "Unique Manuka Factor", a global standard that identifies and measures the antibacterial power and medicinal quality of the honey. The higher it is, the more the honey is deemed active.

Flora offers you a range of Manuka honey that naturally contain methylglyoxal (MGO) and whose UMF has been identified accordingly:

MGO 30+ Minimum level: recommended as food while providing a higher concentration of active components than ordinary honey.

MGO 100+ Minimum-medium level: it is the most powerful “daily use” honey. Provides a considerable support to the immune system during the winter season.

MGO 250+ Average level: recommended to help with seasonal affections of the respiratory tract and minor health conditions. Appropriate level for applying on the skin (wounds that are slow to heal, pimples, etc.)

MGO 400+ High level: powerful enough to relieve several clinical conditions, including burns, canker sores, wounds and to relieve coughs, sore throats and bronchitis.

MGO 550+ Very high level: it is the honey with most powerful active components. Recommended for more serious diseases such as gastroenteritis, to relieve respiratory diseases and for certain skin conditions, etc.

A true treasure of nature, Flora’s Manuka honey is available in recyclable, food grade, BPA free containers.

*More information about the Maori partners who provide this honey. Text by Thomas Greither, owner of Flora.

“In line with Flora and our Maori partner’s values, we want to give consumers a product they can completely rely on and trust to be certifiably authentic, providing the quality of Manuka we claim. It was also very important to us that we partner with a 100% Maori-owned company following the history of exploitation, marginalization and confiscation of Lands of the Maori people. Maori have become a major player in the Manuka Honey Industry due to the majority of Manuka honey deriving from Maori Lands. Most of this land was deemed to be marginal and in very isolated areas until the Manuka Honey phenomenon.”
